About the trek

Local Canberran David Collison, and a team of trekkers are preparing to tackle the gruelling Kokoda Trail in an Anzac Day pilgrimage that aims to raise funds for Diabetes ACT to provide vital services.

David was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes in 2005. He currently manages his diabetes through regular exercise, assigned medication and challenges such as the Kokoda Trail. After dealing with his disease over the past four years, he has dedicated this trek to raising funds for Diabetes ACT. All proceeds raised through sponsorship and donations will go directly to Diabetes ACT.

David says “By taking the Kokoda journey we hope to remind people of the importance of supporting those affected by diabetes. We also aim to promote understanding of daily challenges faced by those living with diabetes”.

“Diabetes is an issue that knows no boundaries and is a major challenge facing Australia and the rest of the world. Our trek has been organised on the same basis – no boundaries” explains David.

David served in the Air Force for 21 ½ years and after many years in uniform, it humbles him now to have the opportunity to “retrace the footsteps of our forefathers” and appreciate the commitment, dedication and valour they went through to make our lives so much better.

His journey over the Kokoda Trail with Kokoda Historical starts on Wednesday 21 April until Monday 3 May 2010. The journey covers 96kms of rugged terrain.

David will be joined by three of his dear friends (two still serving and one now in civilian life):
