NATIONAL DIABETES SERVICES SCHEME (NDSS)

The National Diabetes Services Scheme is an initiative of the Commonwealth Government administered by Diabetes Australia Ltd (DA). Diabetes ACT acts as an agent for DA to administer the scheme in the ACT.

Multilingual NDSS information

The NDSS provides blood and urine testing strips, syringes and needles, insulin pump consumables at subsidised prices to people who register for its benefits.

Who is eligible to register for the NDSS?

People who are resident in Australia and have been diagnosed with diabetes by a medical practitioner and hold a current Australian Medicare card.

If you are a visitor to Australia, and from a country with a Reciprocal Health Care Agreement, you may be entitled to temporary registration to the NDSS.

To register on the NDSS a registration form must be completed by the applicant and their Doctor or an Accredited Diabetes Educator and sent to DACT for completion. There is no cost to register for NDSS.

A NDSS registration card will be sent to the applicant’s address as soon as the registration process has been completed.

For further information or an application form please call Diabetes ACT on 1300 136 588.

HOW TO PURCHASE NDSS PRODUCTS

The cost registrants pay for products (co-payment) is detailed on the NDSS Order Form. The price per pack depends on each registrant’s status – i.e. Non-Concession Card Holders (General), Concession Card Holders such as Health Care, Pension and DVA Card Holders. Please refer to an Order Form for details.

For more information relating to Insulin Pump Consumables and other useful NDSS information from Diabetes Australia, please download the IPC Product Order Form.

Free Syringes

Diabetes ACT has successfully negotiated with the ACT government to subsidise the co-payment share of any needles or syringes purchased by NDSS registrants within the ACT. This effectively makes the needles and syringes "free" to eligible registrants. This applies in all states and territories.

How many products can I obtain?

Registrants are allowed to obtain 900 reagent strips and/or 1200 syringes/needles in any 180 day period. If you require more than four test strips or four syringes/needles per day, please contact Diabetes ACT so that we can make arrangements to meet your needs.

If you are accessing products from a Sub-agent please be aware that they are unable to carry the large quantities of products which DACT is capable of. Sub-agents should be able to supply you with at least two packets of test strips and one box of pen needles or syringes at any one time. If you use an uncommon test product or test more than four times a day and therefore need higher than average number of strips you should speak to your Sub-agent about your needs so they are able to arrange sufficient stock of your products.

Where to access NDSS Products in the ACT

General NDSS products are stocked by Diabetes ACT and pharmacy Sub-agents.

Products may also be ordered from Diabetes ACT by mail or telephone. Delivery of NDSS products is free of charge. Orders will be dispatched within 24 hours for delivery by courier within the ACT, and Australia Post to regional addresses.
