What is a Sub-agent?
Diabetes Australia has established a network of state-based Agents to assist in the delivery of the NDSS.
An Agent may appoint Sub-agents to perform a number of functions and responsibilities under the Scheme. Agents and Sub-agents play an important role in the success of the NDSS.
Sub-agents are appointed by Agents to perform certain functions in relation to the Scheme. Most significantly, Sub-agencies are where Registrants buy their NDSS products. There are approximately 1,700 Sub-agents delivering the NDSS across Australia.
An Agent may appoint any of the following bodies to become an NDSS Sub-agent:
- community pharmacies
- community health centres
- diabetes centres
- hospitals
- divisions of general practice
- appropriate allied health practices
- Aboriginal health services, and
- other appropriate outlets that have been approved by Diabetes Australia in writing.
Key Services
It's important to note that the role of the Sub-agent extends beyond just being a shopfront for NDSS products. The key services provided by Sub-agents are summarised below:
- Provide a reliable supply of products to Registrants, and maintain a supply to meet both the anticipated and actual demand for products from Registrants.
- Receive new registrations for the NDSS and submit them to Diabetes Australia.
- Provide Registrants with accurate and appropriate information and professional advice on diabetes and effective self-management, referrals to appropriate health professionals, advice on the appropriate use of products and distribute NDSS materials to Registrants.
- Provide Registrants with access to a person who is employed or engaged by the Sub-agency who has specialised training in NDSS policies and procedures.
- Display and promote the NDSS, NDSS materials and products.
A significant majority of the NDSS Sub-agents are pharmacies.
Who can become an NDSS Sub-agent?
All approved pharmacies throughout Australia are eligible to become a Sub-agent. However, the pharmacy must first demonstrate the following:
- A current pharmacy licence, location approval and approved PBS supplier status, and
- A high level of interest and commitment to providing speciality services to people with diabetes.
